private residence: Palmetto Bluff, SC
Situated along a bend of the May River in Palmetto Bluff's May River Forest, this modern shingle-style compound was designed to honor its natural surroundings rather than compete with them. Inspired by the lot's gentle contours, a series of connected living spaces and outbuildings are spread across the site, including a pool house, greenhouse, primary and secondary garages, and a two-bedroom guest house with a full kitchen, all linked by a glass-roofed pergola. A signature curve in the standing-seam metal roof is echoed as a consistent detail throughout. Expansive windows and doors open to generous outdoor living areas and an infinity-edge saltwater pool, capturing the live oak canopy and river views from throughout the home.
The interior design directive was to minimize visual noise while maintaining sophisticated character, warmth, and cohesive flow, with all spaces designed to feel comfortable and inviting. White oak flooring, beams, and cabinetry are carried throughout, anchoring a Scandinavian-influenced aesthetic. The neutral palette draws from the warm browns, soft blue grays, and creamy taupes found in native oyster shell tabby. A tabby fireplace anchors the great room, and a sculptural iron-bronze floating staircase serves as a focal point in the main living area. Artwork was intentionally sourced from Southern artists, grounding the interiors in a strong sense of place.
